Common Questions about Hoop Houses

1. How many seasons does it take the average grower to pay for a new Hoop House?
Most growers can more than cover the cost of their Hoop House in just a single season.

2. Do I need to get a building permit for my Hoop House?
Because a Hoop House isn’t considered a permanent structure, a permit isn’t usually required. But to be safe, check with your local zoning board or building inspector.

3. I want to stretch my growing season as much as possible; what would you suggest?
Start with a genuine Hoop House and extend your season 3-4 months. Then for extra growing weeks, add a second layer of insulating film and an inflation blower. Some growers even use floating row covers inside the Hoop House during the coldest months. Call us for details.

4. How do I control the temperature in my Hoop House?
The classic phrase “warmed by the sun and cooled by the winds” describes the natural temperature regulation process in our greenhouses. Even on cloudy days, the sun warms the interior of a Hoop House nicely. Roll up the sides and open the doors for ventilation; a breeze will take care of the rest. What could be more cost efficient?

5. My land is windy and we get winter snows. Can I still build a Hoop House?
Yes, genuine Hoop Houses are designed with strong steel frames to handle winds and snow, with a little help from you. Site your Hoop House perpendicular to the prevailing winds for good ventilation, and take advantage of a windbreak if you have one. Also, remember that wet snow is heavy, so brush it off to keep the weight from damaging the greenhouse film.

6. What’s the best way to use vertical space in a Hoop House?
Add purlins! These horizontal rods were made for hanging baskets, tying up tomatoes, beans and cucumbers. This is a great way to efficiently use every square inch of your growing space.

7. Does a Hoop House have a door on each end or just on one?
Feel free to customize your greenhouse anyway you like, but traditionally a Hoop House has an easy access door on each end, plus a pair of windows.

8. Is it possible to use my Hoop House for a chicken coop?
Yes, with poultry netting the hoop design makes a great chicken coop or aviary. Growers have also used shade cloth to create a perfect site for orchids and other specialty plants.

9. What material is used for your Hoop House frames?
Tubular galvanized steel is formed into the “hoops” that create the framework of our greenhouses. We’ve found this material to be low maintenance, strong and long-lived.

10. What components are included in a Hoop House greenhouse kit?
For a detailed list of the items included in each kit, see the "Greenhouse Kit Components" link on the left side of this web page.

11. I may want to move my greenhouse; is that possible?
Yes, a fully assembled Hoop House can be relocated, seasonally or whenever your landscaping plans change. You’ll probably want to call a couple of strong friends over to help, but you won’t need a tractor or other heavy equipment. Try doing that with a glass house!

12. Are Hoop House greenhouses a good choice for people seeking retirement or second incomes?
Yes! Our growers have the freedom to manage their own businesses, work part time or fulltime, and to spend lots of time outdoors. Also, many are able to work from home, which is wonderful for families with children.

13. I’m tall; can I stand up straight in a Hoop House?
Yes, our Hoop Houses are over 7 feet tall at the peak and 10 feet wide, allowing for a 2-foot wide path down the center and 4-foot growing beds on each side for easy access. Some growers even use a tiller inside.

14. How is my Hoop House shipped?
Our Hoop House has hoops that can be dismantled, allowing for easy UPS shipping to any home or business address. This approach is quick and economical.

15. Do you have a minimum order?
No, we want to be a convenient source for your greenhouse needs and are happy to take orders, both large and small. Order online 24/7. Or call us at 1-800-760-5192 to order, or for help with custom projects or kits in unusual lengths.

16. What is your warranty?
We want you to be happy with your Hoop House and we stand behind our product. Our greenhouse film has a 4 year warranty against manufacturing defects -- most owners get 6-8 years of growing time before slipping on a new “skin”. All other components carry a 4 year warranty against manufacturing defects.
